After waiting some time in Mexico for borders to reopen, it started to seem like quarantine was far from over. With no signs of corona slowing down in central and south america, I decided return to the US. I had been wanting to visit the Sierra Nevadas for some time, and I wanted to take […]

San Cristóbal (again)
Corona virus has forced a change of plans. I spent the better part of April and May in Guatemala, waiting for the situation to improve. The regulations in Guatemala were strict, and it was impossible to leave town without authorization from local authorities. When things looked like they weren’t going to improve anytime soon, I […]
Lago Atitlán
San Pedro was my first stop in Guatamala. San Pedro is located on the shores of Lago Atitlán, a gorgeous lake surrounded by volcanoes. The incredible nature, colorful markets, and friendly people has made this stop one of my favorites so far. Panajachel Panajachel is one of the larger towns near Lago Atitlán, and it […]
San Cristóbal
I spent 6 weeks in San Cristóbal, partly to improve my Spanish, but mostly to enjoy some of the really great XC flying Chiapas has to offer. The wonderful city of San Cristóbal in combination with nice flying made this a highlight of my trip so far. The weather was flyable almost every day, and […]
Palenque
The weather forecast in Nucatili looked bleak for flying, so I decided to take two days to drive to the famous Mayan ruins of Palenque. These are some of the best ruins in Mexico, and the drive there takes you through some fantastic Chiapas jungle scenery. I stopped at Agua Azul, Misol-ha, and Aluxes wildlife […]
Orizaba
Orizaba was my only stop in Veracruz. As I approached the city, I was amazed at the sight of Pico de Orizaba. Standing at 18,491 ft, it dwarfed all the surrounding terrain. Though I intended to stop in Orizaba only to fly, it was hard to resist the urge to climb Pico. I arrived in […]
Colima
I spent a few weeks in Colima, first touring around the area and then flying (thanks to Britton and Gabe for saving the day!). Top of my list was the Manatlán Biosphere reserve. This was a really nice drive that would be nice for camping. I also visited the nearby town Comala, which had a […]
Tapalpa
The pilots in Colima had some good things to say about the flying in Tapalpa. Only 2 hours from Colima, I thought it would be worth a trip. Tapalpa is one of Mexico’s many Pueblos Mágicos. The town is located at almost 2,000 m above sea level, and so at night it was quite cold. […]
Guadalajara
It’s been a while since my last update. Since mid-November I’ve been in Guadalajara working on my Spanish. I’m staying in a part of the city called Tlaquepaque, a historic and beautiful part of town that receives lots of tourists. I was fortunate to become acquainted with a local climber. We went to a park […]
Urupan and Tangancícuaro
I decided to make these two stops on my way to Colima. Both these cities have small national parks in or near them. In Urupan the park consists of a river with some waterfalls that is surrounded by jungle. The park near Tangancícuaro is a lake with crystal clear water.
